The magical power of Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra, although known as yogic sleep, is not actual sleep, but a trance of awareness. It is a state of mind between wakefulness and dream, a practice that allows you to access deeper levels of mind, right down to the unconscious, while remaining conscious.

During the practice of Yoga Nidra, your intellectual or conscious mind is operating, but the deep relaxations allows the doors of the subconscious to open as they do during sleep.
The subconscious mind contains information that can be accessed by the conscious mind if directed to it, such as a recalled memory or when we move on “automatic pilot.” The unconscious is not as clearly defined, such as childhood traumas that continue to affect an adult’s behaviour without a clearly remembered scenario.

It is widely acknowledged that 90% of our thoughts and behaviour emerge through the programming and conditioning of our subconscious and unconscious minds throughout our lives.

It is also widely accepted that our state of mind and emotion affects our overall physical health, and that “dis-ease” finds its source in affliction within our mental-emotional states.

By consciously penetrating the depths of the human mind to the subconscious and unconscious mind – the most powerful forces that exist within us – we are able to influence the very forces that affect our peace of mind, physical health, and our lives.

Interestingly, the subconscious mind is very obedient, immediately carrying out the orders that you put to it. Therefore, by the practice of Yoga Nidra, you can train your subconscious mind completely and, as a result, the ordinary or conscious mind and intellect will follow.

During the state of Yoga Nidra, you have the power to:

Transform the nature of your mind
Do you find yourself having negative thoughts of judgement and blame? Are you quick to anger, lazy, or airy-fairy? While certain characteristics are bound by nature’s forces and the elements, as described in Yoga and Ayurveda, others are born of stress, fear and traumas. These are the issues that can be addressed by Yoga Nidra.

Transform your behaviour
Have you acquired a habit, such as smoking, that you want to stop? Do you notice a certain pattern in your behaviour that you feel could be stemming from something deeper? Yoga Nidra helps you recognise a weed, uproot it, and plant a seed of intention that will affect your future behaviour as your conscious mind follows – like a computer operating system follows instructions in a code.

Self-heal
Are you ill, stressed out, or suffering from a chronic ailment? Yoga and Ayurveda are holistic in nature, meaning they do not see the body, mind and spirit as separate, but rather that each influences the other. By healing emotional pain and negative thoughts, the body’s road to self-healing begins. A happy mind and happy heart is key to a healthy body, according to Ayurveda, Yoga’s sister science of life.

Inspire creative genius
Are you experiencing a dull time in your life and feel unable to instigate change? Creativity resides in a place beyond thought, as does inspiration. Yoga Nidra frees the subconscious mind and allows it to express itself in imagination, while in conscious awareness. Marvellous things can be achieved when creativity and intention are put together during a state of Yoga Nidra.

Yoga Nidra can be practiced daily as a form of deep relaxation, concentration and self-awareness, as well as for any of the specific reasons mentioned above. Learning the practice can literally change your life.
