Mindful Eating

In Ayurveda, how you eat is just as important as what you eat. Eating while stressed or multitasking, or when your attention is not focused on the food, can lead to indigestion due to inadequate chewing. Mindful eating, on the other hand, helps support proper digestion, allowing you to absorb the necessary nutrients from the food for both the body and the mind, while eliminating toxins. Here are some tips for practicing mindful eating:
  • Establish a routine for your digestive system by eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time each day.
  • Create a peaceful environment for your meals, free from distractions and over-stimulation, such as television, computers, and mobile phones.
  • Sit in a comfortable and relaxed position while eating.
  • If eating with company, engage in positive conversations and avoid topics that could lead to debates, arguments, gossip, or complaints.
  • Take a few deep breaths before eating, as a way of appreciating all the energy that went into growing, harvesting, transporting, and preparing the food.
  • Engage all your senses in the meal. Observe the colors, smell the scents, and eat slowly while chewing thoroughly (aim for at least 10 chews per bite). Savor the flavor and texture of the food.
  • At the end of each meal, take a few deep breaths before getting up to observe the effects of the meal. Notice how you feel satisfied and nourished through all your senses.
