Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math was established in Nabadwip, West Bengal, India, in 1941 by Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Maharaj. Srila BR Sridhar was the foremost disciple of the illustrious spiritual revolutionary, Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur, who propogated the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math began as a thatched hut on the banks of the Ganges River. From the early 80’s onwards, it received an influx of Westerners flocking to hear the teachings of the Indian saint. It is now the glorious headquarters of an international organisation with over 100 branches or associated Ashrams and Centres around the world. Srila BS Govinda Maharaj, the appointed successor of Srila Sridhar Maharaj, offers guidance in the perfection of yoga to thousands world-wide. Regardless of culture or creed, all may practice the highest ideal of bhakti yoga – the path of pure love and devotion. In 1947, aged seventeen, he came to the lotus feet of his gurudev, Srila BR Sridhar Maharaj. From the beginning his guru recognised his special qualities and expressed the wish that he would become his successor. Srila Govinda Maharaj remained faithfully in uninterrupted service of his guru, in intimate association. Three years before Srila Sridhar Maharaj left the world in 1988, he conferred the order of Tridanda-Sannyasa upon Srila Govinda Maharaj, naming him as his illustrious successor. From his childhood his scholarship and worldly detachment was formidable, and he displayed a natural affinity for the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In 1926, Srila Sridhar Maharaj joined the Sri Gaudiya Math, and became an initiated disciple of its founder, the illustrious Srila BS Saraswati Thakur (1874-1937). After the passing of his guru, Srila Sridhar Maharaj's associates and the general public naturally revered him as the senior-most representative of Sri Gaudiya Sampradaya established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarswati, although Srila Sridhar Maharaj himself was more inclined to anonymity as a humble Vaisnava. In 1941 he established Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. On August 12th, 1988, Srila BR Sridhar Maharaj left the world to enter eternal Samadhi. His entire life was a mission. At a very young age, he helped his father, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, with Sanskrit translations of Vedic scriptures, and proceeded to transform the conception of divinity of India. With his first step, he vigorously cut asunder the whole plane of exploitation, and with his second, he put a stop to all the calculations of the different scholars with their different conceptions of salvation and liberated stages. With his third step, he minimized the hardness and stiffness of the rules and regulations of calculative practice, by a touch of the Divine Love. To exemplify this sublime ideal, Srila BS Saraswati established sixty-four Gaudiya Maths in India in the 1930's, and all through he embraced the teachings of Lord Chaitanya. Srila Gaura Kisora Das Babaji Maharaj namo gaura-kisoraya bhaktavadhuta-murtaye gauranghri-padma-bhrngaya radha-bhava nisevine Srila Gaura Kisora Das Babaji Maharaj is regarded as the embodiment of worldly detachment and devotional attachment. He was the babaji disciple of Srila Bhagavat Das Babaji Maharaj, who was the babaji disciple of Srila Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj. An intimate associate of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, Srila Gaura Kisora Das uncompromisingly refuted pseudo and professional spirituality. Constantly absorbed in the devotional mood of divine separation, his external actions could not be comprehended by the general public. Srila Sachchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakur vande bhakti-vinodam sri gaura-sakti-svarupakam bhakti-sastrajna-samrajam radha-rasa-sudha-nidham Srila Sachchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakur, the nineteenth century pioneer of Krishna consciousness – the development of Divine consciousness and loving relationship with the Sweet Absolute, Reality the Beautiful - was born in 1838 in Bengal. He worked tirelessly to preserve the pure spiritual tradition and literature of India; he composed, edited, and published more than 100 books in Sanskrit, Bengali, and English. By his profuse writings, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur re-established the pure current of spirituality, which had become overgrown with speculative interpretations and misrepresentation. He taught that the apparently sophisticated philosophies and doctrines which deviate one to materialism, salvation, voidism and so on must be abandoned by the true aspirants of self-realisation; yet, he acknowledged that, from the universal standpoint, such 'charming' distractions served to segregate the insincere from the sincere. The pioneer of pure bhakti, it was Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur who foretold that people the world over would join under the banner of Sri Chaitanya Maharabhu's Harinama Sankirttan (congregational chanting). Srila Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj gaura-vrajasrita sesair vaisnavair-vandya-vigraham jagannatha-prabhum vande premabdhim vrddha-vaisnavam Srila Jagannath Das Babaji was the siksa-guru (instructing spiritual master) and babaji-guru of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur. Although physically crippled, Srila Jagannath Das danced in divine inspiration upon discovering the birthplace of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is said that he lived for 125 years, and was known and revered by many. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in this world in 1486, in Mayapur, West Bengal, India. He is considered the most merciful incarnation of Divinity who posed as a pure devotee and revealed the most sublime sentiments and the natural disposition of a devotee. He taught by example how to establish a connection with the Supreme through the practice of pure bhakti, the yoga of love and devotion. Lord Chaitanya appeared in this world along with his associates, Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Sri Advaita Acharya, Sri Gadadhar Pandit and Srivas Thakur. Together they are known as the Pancha-Tattva. They spread the yuga-dharma, or the practice most recommended for the attainment of pure love for the Supreme. That process is Harinam Sankirttan, or the congregational chanting of the maha-mantra, or 'great mantra': Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Sri Sri Radha-Krishna According to Gaudya-Vaisnava tradition, Sri Sri Radha-Krishna are the original source of everything manifest and unmanifest, the female and male portions of the Absolute. Sri Krishna is the predominant and Sri Radha is the predominated – the powerful and the power; the reservoir of all pleasure and the pleasure potency. They are the Absolute conception of Reality the Beautiful, of which life experience, bound by ego, mind and the senses, is simply a perverted reflection. |
